STOP! Although Taumarunui is a junction town, there is every reason to stop, stretch your legs and take in some of the lovely Whanganui River sights.
The Cherry Grove walk takes you beside the Rod McLiesh Reserve heading left down the banks of the Whanganui River to the Victory Bridge. For a longer walk (around 45 minutes) keep walking the banks of the river until you reach the end of town at the Matapuna Bridge by the Taumarunui Camping Ground. At the Cherry Grove end you'll see the meeting of the Ongarua and Whanganui Rivers as they join (park in the carpark by the DOC hut). There is no "official" paved track at such, but you can easily meander the river. It will take about 20 minutes to do the walk and loop back to your car.
We Reckon | A really nice surprise. Very quiet and scenic, and a great place to stop and stretch your legs, tucked away from the State Highway.
