Seeking solitude and peace on the wild west coast of Auckland? You can only get to Anawhata Beach by foot, so less populated and delightful in the summer.
Heaps of birdlife and wild windswept coastal bush to explore. A popular surf beach, Anawhata Beach doesn’t have a surf patrol – so be very confident, or very careful, A great beach for a scavenger hunt after a big westerly storm.
You'll drive a 9km winding metal road before you hit the Anawhata Beach carpark at the top of the hill. Allow a good 30 minutes steep downhill walk (some metal road, some dirt track) before you hit the beach. Well worth it if you love isolation!
We Reckon | We probably don't recommend young children for this one --- you wouldn't want to be carrying them up the hill, or down for that matter! Nice spot though, don't let the walk there put you off.
Getting to Anawhata Beach | Anawhata Regional Park is signposted off Piha Road. To get to the beach, take the Anawhata Beach track which is signposted (at the end of Anawhata Road). It takes about an hour return trip to the beach (2kms).
